The Emergency Center
In the Village there is an “Emergency Center”providing first aid and treatment to ” severely malnourished and dehydrated children. ”
The Center is devoted to ” nutritional therapy ” for severe malnutrition and dehydration of children affected by ” marasmus” – caused by extreme food deficiency, and characterized by extreme thinness, dehydration, and swollen abdomen – or by “kwashiorkor” – caused by serious protein deficiency and characterized by thinness with swollen face, hands and feet.
Francesco has called these children the“little skeletons”, as they are only skin and bones,sometimes with huge, disproportionate eyes, sometimes with small eyes with no life.
The Emergency Center can accommodate up to 15/20 children at a time,together with their mothers. It has its own kitchen, and a storehouse. Younger children and newborns are accommodated in a separate facility.
The staff of the Center is made of a local physician - present three afternoons a week - a registered nurse,two assistant nurses, two women, who are there to help the mothers,the cleaning staff and the kitchen staff.
The main treatment for these children is food therapy, which may have a variable duration,but in most cases, requires some months of inpatient stay.Special milk, enriched with vitamins and oil,in small but numerous daily doses, is given to younger children. Milk, sugar, and a varied diet(meat, eggs, fresh vegetables, together with the local bread, “injera”) are given to older children.For all of them clean and safe water.
Children arriving to the Center are often in very severe conditions, complicated by Aids or other diseases(tuberculosis, malaria, etc.).
In these cases,food therapy is more difficult, as it happens that their body refuses food.In the most severe cases children need antibiotic therapy and they must be hydrated by intravenous infusion.When we have several of these cases, we are obliged to send the children to the local hospital,where they are assisted, in turn, by women of our staff.
The Emergency Center also provides assistance and treatment to the children of the Village.
It has become a point of reference in the area. Children are referred to the Center also from the local Hospital,which is not appropriately equipped for food therapy.
The “Emergency Center” needs help to operate and function effectively.
